"Decide" by Steven on February 16, 2010, 11:25 pm, in category General
The "Getting Things Done" (GTD) productivity model by David Allen, productivity expert and best-selling author, consists of five basic steps:

1.  Collecting - getting your hands around all your "stuff".
2.  Processing - looking at each item and deciding what to do with it.
3.  Organizing - having a place for everything and putting it there.
4.  Reviewing  - remembering what you need to do at the time you can do it.....

"Get Your Needs Met" by Steven on February 9, 2010, 11:36 pm, in category General
I read an article a few days ago by Talane Miedaner, a pioneer in life coaching, in which she said something to the effect that we all have needs and, if we don't get them met, they will continue to show up in our lives, often in unanticipated ways.

Of course, she wasn't talking about the basic physical needs -- food, water, shelter, etc. -- but psychological needs.  Like other areas of our lives, our needs should be examined and dealt with intentionally. &nbs.....

"Piles" by Steven on February 2, 2010, 11:34 pm, in category General
One Saturday morning, I was in that enjoyable state between sleep and wakefulness, and having an interesting dream.  While I had been briefly awake, I was thinking about working at the soup kitchen later that day.   I began dreaming again, dreaming about getting some clothes together to take to the soup kitchen to give out to people who were cold.  I picked up an article of clothing that didn't fit me anymore and had some small holes in it.  I thought to m.....

"Bottlenecks" by Steven on January 27, 2010, 2:14 pm, in category General
What is holding you back?  What is the one major, primary thing that is keeping you from achieving a goal you really want?

In every system, there is one area, one aspect, or one step that slows everything else down -- a bottleneck.  Nothing can go faster than the slowest part.  It's the same concept you may have heard in the old saw, "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link."

The good news is, if you improve the bottleneck, you im.....

"The End Is The Beginning" by Steven on January 19, 2010, 11:52 pm, in category General
"There will come a time when you believe everything is finished.  That will be the beginning." ~ Louis L'Amour

I am excellent at planning.  Ask my wife, Rebecca.  For example, I've been planning for about 3 months now to straighten up the garage.  I'm planning to do or visit or try many other things, too.  I'm great at planning.

What I'm not so good at is getting started and following through.  At least on some things......

"Remembering 2009" by Steven on January 5, 2010, 11:41 pm, in category General
The new year is often a time for beginning new things.  We make resolutions and sometimes we make other new starts . . . a new project, a new job.  Rebecca and I just completed moving furniture, etc. up and down the stairs to create a new exercise room in our former guest room.  It can be exciting, sometimes a little scary (and sometimes just downright hard work!), to make a fresh
start and the new year just naturally offers a place to start anew.

It i.....

"Clarify Your Values" by Steven on December 8, 2009, 11:30 pm, in category General
What do you value?  Values are principles or qualities we deem as worthy or desirable.  We all value some qualities over others, but we aren't always aware of what those are.  Or we don't always live out the values we say we have.  If you want to know what you value, look at how you spend your time and energy.

A number of years ago when my children were younger, I realized that, even though I said I valued my family, I was spending a l.....

"Flight Plan" by Steven on November 24, 2009, 11:52 pm, in category General
I've been reading in a book I received recently, "Flight Plan" by Brian Tracy.  Tracy compares the act of creating a strategy for achieving goals with the flight plan that a pilot files before take off.  When a pilot steps into the cockpit, she has a definite destination in mind and she has created a flight plan to get herself and her passengers to the destination.  But, due to various elements beyond her control -- weather patterns, cross winds, storms, etc. -- she.....

"Questions Trigger Creative Thinking" by Steven on November 3, 2009, 11:14 pm, in category General
Many years ago, I heard someone give a talk about a book he had just read.  I don't remember the name of the book, the name of the author, or the name of the person giving the speech, but I remember the premise of the book because the idea impressed me so much.  And the idea is this:  The only way we humans can think about something is to ask -- and answer -- questions.

Most of what passes as thinking for the majority of us isn't really "thinkin.....
